: Dear Doctor,
My mother is having severe side-effects from tegretol and is weaning of this med and onto mysoline which she had been on for many years, tolerated well and was seizure free.  The med  was changed due to her opthmologist said mysoline contributed to her Fuchs Syndrome(have you ever heard of that?)  Can she abruptly stop the tegretol?  She is so sick, or would there be withdrawal symptoms or just an increase in possibility
of seizure.  Thanks for your input.

Thanks for the question Leanne. I know almost nothing about Fuchs syndrome. I believe it is a form of endothelial dystrophy (problem with the layers of the cornea degenerating). I do not know about mysoline causing Fuchs syndrome but if that is so then I'm not sure why they would resume that medication. No seizure medication should be abruptly stopped because of the increased seizure risk. I assume that the mysoline is being added as the tegratol is being decreased and that should protect her from having a seizure. These questions really should be addressed by her present neurologist. Other than seizures we really do not see withdrawl (withdrawal) type symptoms coming off of most seisure medication. Good luck
