1.Which test(echo, mri,ct scan) is the best in diagnosing and excluding large and small aneurysm in the brain in middle age men? 2. Which test is the best in diagnosing and excluding angiomas and hemangiomas in the brain? Can the above be diagnosed without contrast? If no how and what contrast is usually used and are there serious side effects?Thank you

A CT angiogram is the best non-invasive test to detect aneurysms as small as 2-3mm in size. This test requires iodinated contrast, and the most serious side effect is an allergic reaction to the contrast. MRI angiograms are also non-invasive, may or maynot use contrast, but typically only detect aneurysms as small as 5mm. The standard test is an actual angiogram, but this is an invasive test. This requires iodinated contrast as well.

To look for angiomas or hemangiomas, the MRI is the best technique. This may require the use of contrast with gadolinium depnding on the size of the angioma.

I hope this helps, good luck.
