tinnitus caused by sudden deafness

  Dear Doctor:
I have tinnitus caused by sudden deafness
for 8 years.  I lost high frequency response; otherwise
my left ear functions well but tinnnitus which is getting worse
lately.  My question is:  Is it true
  cutting audiological nerve does not
  stop ringing?
Is there something you can help me?
  I truly appreciate your response.

Dear Tsuneo,
Tinnitus may be caused by many things.  The real question is why did the
sudden 'deafness' occur eight years ago?  Things to consider would be infections,
tumors as well as other etiologies.  You should see an Otolaryngologist
(Ear,Nose and Throat Surgeon) for an audiogram and possibly an MRI.  He or
she would best be able to manage your tinnitus when armed with this information.
Good luck.
