top of head headache

What can cause top of the head headaches? They start after getting up but usually don't last all day. Ultrim doesn't help. Indomethacin helps some.

There are only a limited number of locations in the head and neck which register headache. Common locations are behind the eye, the temple, the top of the head (vertex), and the back of the skull (occiput). This is because the brain isn't very good at assigning location to the pain signals it gets. This is the concept of "referred" pain, that is, when pain is perceived in one place but may have originated somewhere else.
Vertex head pain is most commonly "tension" type headache. Sometimes migraines do this, depending on the pattern over time. If this is a problem more in the winter than summer, check carbon monoxide (from heaters). Sometimes certain sleep disorders can produce this (with elevated carbon dioxide levels in the blood). Also, structural problems (such as arthritis) in the cervical spine (neck) can cause similar headaches.
