: Question:
Have Multiple Sclerosis. I have a tremor on the left side of the
face when I move my lip to the left side. The tremor
involves the entire area of the left cheek. Could this be a
damaged nerve from the multiple sclerosis? There is no pain.
  thank you
  Thomas

Dear Thomas:
The answer to your question is yes. You may have what is called "Facial myokimia". It has also been described as the "bag of worms". One of the commonest causes of this sign is MS. It results from spontaneous electrical firing of the facial nerve because of an MS plaque in the brainstem. If it is very bothersome, membrane-stabilizing medications such as some anticonvulsants may be helpful in controlling it.
If you live near the Cleveland area, and in case you desire a second opinion and want further explanation of this or another MS-related issue, you could call up (216)444-8600 or (800)223-2273 for an appointment to see a neurologist specializing in MS (Drs. Rudick, Kinkel, Cohen or Guttman) at the Mellen Center for MS affiliated to the Cleveland Clinic.
