Hi

Trigeminal neuralgia is a neuropathic disorder of the trigeminal nerve (V cranial nerve) that leads to intense pain in the eyes, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, and jaw. There is no cure for trigeminal neuralgia. However, people generally get relief with medication like carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), topiramate, phenytoin, or gabapentin. In some cases, surgery may be recommended, either to relieve the pressure on the nerve or to selectively damage it in such a way as to disrupt pain signals from getting through to the brain. Unfortunately, you may be on medication for years and have to live with it. There may be adverse events associated with Trileptal, and your neurologist may switch you to another medication. Oxcarbazepine (Trileptal) is listed in Pregnancy Category C which means that that caution is advised, but the benefits of the medicine may outweigh the potential risks. Hence, when you decide to have a baby, please consult your physician regarding the Trileptal dosing.
