unrelenting pain after surgery for morton's neuroma,

My husband has a history of bad feet,has worn orthotics since 1978, and over time had to have replacements. Works heavy construction(power plant maintenance,construction. Was told that the concrete and metal that he stands on make the problem worse.
Podiatrist(sp) told him pain caused by a neuroma and could easily be relieved. Day surgery, back on feet in 6 weeks at work in 8.No more pain sounds great, MIke jumped at the chance, took leave and went ahead, complications, 2 blood clots removed from 1 foot and one from the other, and a stitch removed from the one with only 1 blood clot. then and infection caused foot to break open. antibotics and foot soaks, healed, but persistant pain...much worse that it was before the surgery. Went to ortho, and he wants to do EMG (electrical study) had one several years ago,after back injury, this should more closely be described as torture as enough shock to lift me off table then is extremely painful. Is there any other test to find out what is wrong. First surgery was 6-99 it is now 6-2000 pain feels like stakes driven thru foot, extremely touchy, cant bare slightest touch on top of foot almost as sensetive on bottom. Tops of feet at scar are discollored slightly bluish and cold. Am on amitryptiline 200mg, for pain, and to help sleep, darvocette N/100 and sometimes percocette. Also take flexaril for back injury and prilosec for gerd caused by indosin sr. (gastro says NO anti inflamitory meds or asprin like stuff.) Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry to hear about all the foot problems. It is difficult to tell the extent of what the possible etiologies might be as there have been several things happening, surgery, infection, etc. I also am uncertain about your explanation of multiple blood clots. I think I would agree with the ortho concerning an EMG. I realize it is painful, but the pain currently is no picnic either. I would see a neurologist who is familiar with muscle/nerve problems and EMG. If there has been multiple problems and surgeries, there may have been nerve damage. The EMG will help clarify this. The extent of the pain and sensory changes also need to be found as this may also give clues to the extent of the problem. The ortho and neurologist will probably work together on this as well as maybe a vascular specialist. I hope that things can be resolved.
