Not to scare you, but this is serious.  I have had a left vertebral artery dissection, caused by head trauma.  Generally what happens is a stroke, but perhaps since your doctor was aware of this immediately, that will not be the case for you as it was for me.

This is my story, and might not pertain to you, but I was sick for about 10-14 days with very bad vertigo.  Over the course of many months, it got somewhat better, with occasional flare ups.  I continually had balance problems and the feeling that things were still in motion when I'd stop, as in driving or walking. I developed acquired nystagmus (shaking of the eyes), but it's so slight that most people don't notice it.  This developed into Oscillopsia and caused a lot of dizziness for me.  I have developed severe migraines.  I have vision problems that come and go now and balance problems that can be severe one day and not so bad the next.  Google Oscillopsia if you have never heard of it, as well as acquired Nystagmus. This could relate to your vertigo.  Vertigo can also have a vestibular component in that it is related to the ears and other vestibular regions.  I would have a brain MRI and see if there are any areas of it that are affected.  That's what I did.  I also had an MRA to determine where the artery was severed, but you might not need that.  I have been seeing a neurologist for 8 years now, and take medications to help with the symptoms. Hope this helps.
