vertigo help!

by cathyr, May 13, 2008 04:40PM
2 months ago I had ear fullness and dizziness and vomitting...then the dizziness got worss. They gave me 3 weeks of antibiotics only to find out through CT scan and MRI all was fine. They Dx me with vertigo (from where)...they cant tell me if its vestibular neuritis? Wouldn't the MRI show that? The ear pressure and dizzies are still there. They give me Ativan to sleep. HOW LONG DOES THIS LAST? I AM GOING INSANE!!! I found a VRT Physiotherapist. DO I HAVE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO MY VESTIBULAR SYSTEM. This all started after my husband and I tried an IUI treatment for fertility and they gave me Femare (I took it for 3 days then couln't handle it and stopped) DRS say it wasn't the drug. My hearing is intact....but the dizzies are there and so in the nausea.....PLEASE HELP....HOW MUCH LONGER?????

Hi there.

A normal CT scan and a normal MRI tells us that there may be nothing anatomically wrong with the vestibular system, and if it is neuritis it should have showed up on these scans.  There are some causes of vertigo that are indeed idiopathic (meaning, the exact cause cannot be determined).  Other possible causes include micronutrient deficiency (such as vitamin B12 and other B vitamins) which can cause some form of neuropathy.  Another is problems in the cerebellum (the part of the brain that controls balance and fine movements), but this would also have shown up on brain MRI.  I suggest you discuss these other possibilities with your doctors/neurologist.  I hope you and your doctors can get to the bottom of this soon.

Wishing for the best.  Regards.

Thank You Dr Paul for your response. On my MRI they found cerical disc 5-6 and 6-7 herniated. I have been trying to tell my Dr it could be a circulation issue to the brain as I have low BP. He disagrees....but when I wera a neck brace the dizziness and ear pressure goes away? He said the cervical discs could have been there for a while...but this all started when my neighbour rear-ended me?
Can this be the cause???
