Hi,
Physiotherapy, good nutrition and use of pain killer medications may help in relieving the symptoms of pain, weakness and inability to use the hand. The time required to  regain strength and function depends on the extent of nerve damage, general health of your father, physiotherapy and good nutrition. Please include protein, multivitamins, multiminerals, calcium and omega 3 fatty acids in the diet of your father and arrange for a good physiotherapist to facilitate a speedy recovery. Please consult a neurologist for further advise. Hope this  helps you. Take care and regards!
