what could be causing such pain

I am experiencing a sharp, shooting pain on the top of my scalp.  It is located wear the part in the hair begins.  It was a sharp, shooting pain that would come and go but be very sharp!  It seemed to last about 10-15 seconds.  It would come and go but not very often, until this weekend.  On Saturday and Sunday of this past weekend I experienced this pain more intense and more frequent.  My scalp is so tender now and very sore to touch.  I read about neuralgia but it seems that would be near the bottom of the scalp not on top.

Several years ago injured my neck and lower back when I lifted my disabled father.  I started having the horrendous pains that all of you complain about, except that mine is a throbbing pain at the top of my head (definitely not migraine).  I went to an orthopedic surgeon and was told that discs C3 through C7 were damaged and had to be replaced.  This was done in January.  I was hoping that I would no longer have the head pain, but it has now come back and is just as debilitating as before.  My next step will be a neurosurgeon.  I hate taking medication but that may be the answer.  I can't go on like this much longer.

I would like to know what may be causing sharp pains in the back of the top of my head. A week ago, it was in the same spot, but on the right side. Then it was behind my right ear, and now it is on the back on the right side again. It is a sharp pain, like a knife jabbing me, and lasts a few seconds. Could this be from high blood pressure? The doctor has been trying to control it for months, but only in the last few days has it been normal, now that they put me on HCTC. I am on metoprolol 100 mgs twice a day, and captopril 50 in the AM, 25 in in the after noon, and 75 mgs in the evening. That wasn't helping, so they added HCTC. I remember years ago having the same kind of pain, but in a different spot. I am 62, and very concerned about this. It hurts me when I lean over as well, and when I cough. What could this possibly be? Is it serious, or something to do with me having hypertension? I have had this pain now for 5 days. Please let me know what you might think it is.

Thanks so much

Hi,

Your symptoms are very suggestive of trigeminal neuralgia. This manifests as pain in the scalp, forehead, and eyes. Lips, nose and jaw may also be involved. Therefore trigeminal neuralgia can occur in the front aspect of scalp also so it is very likely that your symptoms are due to trigeminal neuralgia.
Please get a clinical evaluation done at your earliest and try and identify a trigger for these attacks.

Thanks
