what is sterile meningitis?

Could you please explain to mean what sterile meningitis is and what the symptoms are?
  Thank you
Sterile meningitis also known as aseptic meningitis is applied to any one of numerous infective agents, the majority of which are viral and a few bacterial. Symptoms consists of fever, headache, stiff neck, variable degrees of lethargy.  Occasionaly, there are more focal neuro signs such as numbness/tingling, double vision, changes in reflexes.  In addition to a history and physical exam, a lumbar tap may provide additional information.  In general, the infections are self limited and do not require treatment other than supportive care.  If you are concerned or have any symptoms, I recommend an evaluation by a neurologist. if you are interested in getting an evaluation at CCF call 1-800-CCF-CARE.  Good Luck.
