whole body buzzing and shaking

by Debie__0__0, Sep 23, 1998 12:00AM

My neuro has finally given me a diagnosis of Movement Disorder, more specifically Dystonia.  My hands and arms end up in odd positions and I was very stiff and also very fatigued. I have been taking 6 mg of Artane for over a month and it has helped tremendously with the stiffness and fatigue, and a bit with the posturing too, but I still tend to have that as the dose wears off. A few nights ago, while lying in bed I felt like my whole body was vibrating or buzzing.  I have had the feeling before in an isolated area, such as my thigh, but this time it really felt like it was everywhere.  Eventually I think I fell asleep.  When my husband came to bed I kind of woke up and it was still going on and he felt my body and agreed that it was rhythmically shaking and in fact was shaking our king size bed.  He was quite disturbed by this and so was I.  It continued throughout the night as I woke up several times and it was still going on. My neuro has no idea what this could be but has ordered an EEG. I take no other medication, except that I did take an Extra strength Tylenol for muscle soreness that night right after taking 2 mg of Artane.  Could this be from the combination of medication?  What could this be and have you ever heard of this kind of thing happening with Dystonia or as a side effect of Artane?  Could a seizure last this long and could I have been going in and out of consciousness through the night?  My neuro is as puzzled as my husband and I are.  Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thank you for your time and information.

Whole-body buzzing and tingling would be unexpected with dystonia. Side effect of artane? Possibly. People get unusual effects with that drug, in addition to the usual dry mouth, blurry vision, urinary retention, etc. Depending on how old you are, you may suffer some memory "softening" which should get better if you stopped the medication. Usually, the younger you are, the less likely it is to mess with your memory (40-50 is young).
Many times, patients with an anxiety state report the symptoms you described (whole-body buzzing and shaking). It is not inconceivable that Artane could have produced that. Ask your doctor how to test whether it is a medication effect, and about your options.
The symptom you report is highly unlikely to be a seizure.
Tylenol and Artane should be just fine together.
As you know, this forum can't substitute for medical advice from your doctor. I hope this helps. CCF MD mdf.
