yawning mitigates diplopia?

by Camcm, Feb 01, 2004 12:00AM
Good day. Pls see my earlier posts for details. To sum up,I continue to have almost daily episodes of vertical diplopia, occurring generally in the mornings, early in my exercise routine. Resolves on its own within minutes. MRIs, MRA, VEP, LP, all bloodwork normal. Consult w/neuro-ophthal. yielded dx of left sixth nerve dysfunction, poss. w sup. oblique myokymia, but he was basically stumped. My questions:I discovered by chance that yawning often seems to reduce the diplopia, such that it resolves within seconds instead of 5-8 minutes. Once, I yawned prophylactically about 8 minutes into my run, when I typically start to have symptoms, and I had no diplopia at all. However, it doesn't always work. Does it make medical sense that yawning could work in this way? If yes, can you explain why? Finally, does this suggest anything about the cause of my diplopia? Many thanks for this service.

I am not aware how yawning would treat either 6th nerve dysfunction or myokymia. The airways and these nerves are not connected in any way. I wish I could provide some insight.

Just so you feel you are not alone- I also have exercise induced diplopia.  I get vertical binocular double vision after about 30 minutes of skiing. It goes away about 30 mins after I stop.  All tests so far are normal ( I had a bit of lid lag at first)   Docs are stumped.  I figure it will get better or worse or stay the same.  There doesn't seem to be any thing to do at present.  Does anyone else have exercise induced diplopia?  Does anyone know what causes it?
