Manti Te'o 's girlfriend a hoax?

My husband is a die hard Notre Dame fan and always has been.  This is such a bizarre story of one of their great players who claimed he had a girlfriend who died of leukemia during the season.  He dedicated his games to her and said that she inspired him.  Turns out that it all could have been a strange hoax!  The girl is tweeting saying she's not dead.  There is little evidence that Manti ever really dated her and now he says that he had an online relationship with her only (after giving details of being with her in the past).  Is he in on it?  Was this a joke on him?  Very intriguing and strange.  

Press conference coming I think today at noon about it.  

I can certaily see getting attached to people on line, I mean . . .   look at US!  But Manti may have changed some details to the relationship if there was a relationship.  We shall find out!!

Didnt someone, his father maybe? say they met several times? Im thinking this is all make believe as a result of that statement by dad. I wonder, did they have a fake funeral too?

I think he did it for attention. Rather he did or not, I wish they’d leave it alone. He has embarrassed himself and it will probably follow him for the rest of his career and/or Life.

Well if i was a hoax on him and it was internet relationship then how did he "claim" to meet her and his father said he met her.

He was either involved to get press or to hide a secret. Like maybe he is gay??

It my be wrong but I heard a report that it was other students that actually investigated it. That sounds logical to me because since when did a Journalist actually investigate anything.
On a lighter note someone sent me a pic of his Girlfriend in the shower. It was an empty shower with the water running.

I saw this last night on the news.  It sounds like he claims in was an on line relationship and that the hoax was on him.  The journalist was looking into it based on an email he received.  I think the whole thing is really weird myself, but not something he should be completely persecuted for.

He lied. Plain and simple.

Was it in an effort to garner support & sympathy for himself?

Was it in an effort to motivate the team?

Is he sick in the head and requires a mental-health expert?

Honestly, WHO CARES. He's an amazing football player that told a lie. Isn't the first, and won't be the last.

Seriously... why DESTROY this guy, simply because he told a fib, in an effort to motivate both the team, and himself, to victory?!?

Fine, lying is wrong, but come on.

What I REALLY want to know is... why was the "reporter" or "journalist" looking into this in the first place? Seriously, did he go down the team roster, and research all the players until he found an inconsistency that he could write about? I hate the media and journalists.

This incredible football player/young man's career is being stifled before it's even started, simply because he told a motivational-lie.

I blame the Coach for messing with his Head. He actually told them, Notre Dame could beat a SEC team. That must have been to much for him to handle.

I was perplexed hearing (and reading) about this this morning!  I mean, why in the world would he be in on it?  What would he gain?  The whole thing is just TOO weird!
