Is anyone using a Doula?

Is anyone using a Doula?

Im considering using one but Im still 50/50 on natural or not on the birth.  But its important that I have a vaginal birth and Ive read alot of stories about Doula's getting women in certain positions etc that can assist in getting the baby in position for a vaginal birth.

Any suggestions or personal experiences?

That would be neat! I know this is going to sound dumb but what is a doula exactly?

Its NOT dumb....heck Im dumb to this whole process even though Im surrounded by friends/family with kids! When its you its different! LOL

A Doula is like a birth assistant.  She can do less than a midwife but she can assist in birth positions, massages, etc.  And actually once you go into labor she can come to your home and assist with breathing techniques, massages, positioning etc until you are ready to go to the hospital. After birth they assist in breast feeding in the hospital and usually visit you at home at least once after birth. Here in the Dallas TX area they are anywhere from $300-$750 some offer more things than others Ive noticed.

No doula - I am from a rural area and I don't believe we have any in our community area.  I am seeing a midwife and I am not going natural.  My midwife is part of my ob's office and she already knows that I want an epidural, but I think you get more one on one care with midwives/doulas than you would with just a doctor alone and I think that it is worth it.

My cousin is a doula and is offering me her services for free, so I can't turn that down!  She also has 3 kids so she knows a lot from personal experience too.

Im thinking its worth the investment for my peace of mind.....for sure.  But I like hearing from others personal experience.

I think it sounds like a pretty nice idea; to have someone who's entire job is to focus on YOU during this time!  (Of course that's DH's job too but he's clueless, lol).  I think it would be really reassuring.

OMG if I could afford it I would so do it.  I've been there twice and wow would I have loved to have had a doula there.  The guys...um...yeah...they try but it just takes a woman to know what you are going through.  I've done the Bradley classes for natural childbirth and they too are well worth the investment.  Doula's just bring a sense of calm, peace, control, and naturalness to the birth process.  My advice would be...if you can afford it...do it!
