Anaemia?

Hi I am hypothyroid and take 100mcg of T4 a day. My recent lab results are normal however a friend of mine who knows a lot about ferritin and folate has said my ferritin results are not good.

In November my ferritin was 21 (30-400). I currently take liquid iron supplement as I did not like the ferrous fumerate.

I now think I've developed anaemia as the insides of my lower eyelids are now pale (sorry, photo might be a bit blurry as it was taken on an iPod) as well as still suffering from hypo symptoms and I cannot see a doctor until the 7th May as they are now fully booked. Do I ought to seek help sooner?

Thank you

Hi there,
If you are suspecting that you are anemic then it is best to start taking foods rich in iron like meat, green leafy vegetables, pulses etc. People suffering from hypothyroidism are prone for developing macrocytic anemia. It is caused by inadequate nutrition and malabsorption of vitamin B12 and folic acid. It occurs because T3 and T4 hormones are involved in absorbing these nutrients. It is best to consult a doctor and discuss your concerns. Treatment will depend on the underlying cause. Hope it really helps. Do keep us posted.
Take care and regards!

Hi thanks for your reply.

My doctor is retesting my thyroid function, vitamin D, ferritin and complete blood count.

My Vitamin D last time was 43.6 (>75) I have taken a supplement to help raise my Vitamin D and I take a 3000IU spray.

Ferritin last time was 21 (30-400). I did take a supplement but this only raised my ferritin by 6 units from 15.

Complete blood count is being done as it ought to have been done back in February. Not sure why the doctor did not chase this up.

Vitamin B12 was last done in December and was 363 (180-900). Doctor did not supplement me as my result was normal. People are telling me it is not and that I am low..?

Folate is being retested as in December this was recorded at 4.1 (4.6-18.7) Doctor did not supplement me to correct this, either.

Sorry, doesn't macrocytic anemia cause increased size of red blood cells? The only abnormalities that have ever been flagged up in past complete blood tests is:

an elevated plasma viscosity at 1.9 (1.4-1.7),

elevated red blood cell count - first time it was 5.33 and the second time it was 4.94 (normal range below 4.80).

MCV has been done, too, and was at 83 the first time and 82 after that. (normal range 80-100, so normal I guess)
