Blood clots and flights

Blood clots and flights

Following the discovery of a pulmonary embolism in April '09, I have been taking 5mg of coumadin daily.  My INRs over that time have been very consistently between 2 and 3, which is good.  I exercise a lot and am in good health otherwise.  Next week I am taking a 5-hour flight. I used to be a road warrior, but now am a little nervous.  Any ideas on how to lessen the chance of a blood clot as a result of a long flight?

Your coumadin should keep your chance of developing blood clots in check.  If I were you I would try to stay very hydrated, but no alcohol, and get up and walk some every hour or so and even while you're sitting you can move your feet and legs some. Maybe do some ankle circles, anything to keep the circulation going.  Have a good trip!
