Can't gain weight

by legoloofa, Oct 02, 2009 09:48PM
I am 5'7 and weigh 93lbs; I weigh too little for my height and have tried everything to gain weight.  All my bones are popping out and people are grossed out when they see me.  I haven't worn shorts in the past 7 years and I'm embarrassed to wear a T-shirt.  I've been made fun of my entire life and constantly reassured that being skinny is a positive thing, but it isn’t, at least not in the condition I’m in.  It's disgusting how skinny I am and tired of freaking people out with my lack of body.  I am however not lacking any vitamins as I take a standard supplement everyday which includes a high dose of calcium and vitamin D for my Osteopenia. I also do not have an eating disorder and usually eat more than many of my female friends.

I've been trying to gain weight my entire life and I've ran out of things to try.  Please help!

You did not tell me your age so I cannot calculate the amount of calories you need daily. It is important you are eating healthy and try to eat 3 meals a day with snacks between meals. A Heart Healthy diet will give you the nutrients, vitamins and minerals your body needs, and gain weight slowly due to being underweight. Heart Healthy diet which is a moderate fat diet and a moderate fat diet means = using polyunsaturated (omega 3, corn oil, nuts, etc) fats and monounsaturated (olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, etc) fats, no saturated fats (high fat snack foods, butter, fat spreads) and no trans fats. Eat low fat meats (chicken, fish, loin of pork) or non-meat sources (soy products, nuts), low fat vegetarian combinations (rice & beans, pasta & beans, low fat cheese & pasta), low fat and substitute dairy products (1% milk, low fat/fat free yogurts, low fat soy milk/soy yogurt), use plant oils, non trans-fat margarines, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Eat daily high fiber breads and cereals (oatmeal). Suggest daily drinking either nutrient dense drinks (in addition to eating your meals) such as Carnation Instant breakfast or make own milkshakes - soy yogurt, soy milk, and frozen fruit blended together; or milk, ice cream, and frozen fruit blended together for extra calories, protein and nutrients to help increase your weight. Thank you for your question.
