Just want to say, if it only takes 10 minutes you're not cooking oats, you're cooking rolled oats, and probably quick oats at that, meaning they're already partially cooked and much of the fiber is gone. Whole oats take about an hour to cook. And if you have to add sugar or honey, you're not buying good quality oats -- oats are naturally sweet and don't really need any added sugar.
Hi Jennifer!
I took a Child Health and Nutrition online course from Stanford University (available for free at www.coursera.org) and got good tips for substitutes for all those highly processed ceteals we love. There are also cooking demos included in the course.
Try making oatmeal: Boil 1 cup of oats in 2 cups of water for 10 minutes, adding a bit of sugar or honey and cinnamon abd chopped apple or orher favorite fruits. Not only will you have a good start to your day, you will have a very healthy breakfast which will kerp you full for many hours --and is much cheaper than those expensive, unhealthy processed cereals. Goid luck!
I'd go take a peek at a good local health food store. There's nothing in a supermarket in the cereal department that's actually good for you because either it has too many additives, too much sugar, or too many toxic chemical applications and genetically modified grains. The best cereals, meaning the healthiest, are hot cereals, such as true oatmeal or teff, but a true grain cereal takes a lot of time to prepare. Like you, I just prefer cold cereal, my favorite is to combine Nature's Path millet and rice flakes with some oat bran and Ezekiel sprouted granola.
