Coldsore prevention & treatment

Hi there
I get regular coldsores, often just before my period, but lately more regularly and in more places around my mouth. I know about Lysine but notice no difference when I do and don't take it. I try to have turmeric regularly also. Oh and I use 5% Acliclover Cream (ie Zovirax). I can get 500mg Valacliclover Tablets but they're a bit out of my budget to take daily and I don't want to damage my kidneys. I also find that if I do manage to suppress a coldsore another starts before the suppressed one can heal.

Any suggestions for more effective, less damaging cures?

Thank u Nova. As I said, if I do manage to suppress one it just means I get another before the first/suppressed one has healed. I'm trying to find alternatives to help prevent them occurring at all.

You do not need to take the valtrex daily. I cannot take it daily because it causes kidney issues, but my doc suggested the following.

I take one when I first feel the tingle, before you see anything, and another every 12 hours for 2 days, or till its gone.  As long as I start the med before it erupts I can stop them

Since I began doing that I have not had any come up, and the frequency of me taking the med has decreased signifigantly.
