Yes, Iron is an important mineral for our bodies. It combines with protein to form hemoglobin which carries oxygen to all our cells in the body. Women tend to have lower iron stores due to monthly menstruation. There are different types of iron supplements so I suggest you ask your MD for another type.

Some Iron supplements tend to constipate which may cause some weight gain. Increase your fiber (fruits, vegetables, and whole grains) and fluid intake so you move your bowels on a regular basis.
