Iron confusion

Iron confusion

I'm a male, in my young 30's and I've tried to stay healthy throughout my life by taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement.

However, I've read that men generally shouldn't take a supplement containing iron.

I'm currently taking the Kirkland, (Costco) brand multivitamin/mineral supplement, which contains 18mg (100%) of iron.

I'm a healthy man, but I also donate blood every 2 months.

1.  Should I be concerned and switch supplements to one without  iron?
2.  If so, what would be an inexpensive, alternative supplement without iron?

Thank you so much for your help.

The recommended dose for Iron for males your age is 8mg/day (18mg/day for females), however, you are giving blood every 2 months which depletes your iron stores. You can either continue the supplement or increase daily Iron consummation of foods you eat. High Iron food sources are all meats, fish, dark green vegetables, beans, enriched rice (cooked), enriched pastas (cooked), and whole wheat breads. Vitamin C helps absorb Iron in the gut so it is good to have a vitamin C food with an iron food. For example, drink orange juice with the iron supplement or have mashed potatoes with meat at a meal.
