Lower ferritin, should I be on supplements still?

I had my blood drawn and it showed my ferritin as 19, my iron is fine though. my red blood cell count is at 4.43. I've been having problems with my health, my doctor and I have been trying to find out whats going on. He had my blood checked and it came back with the number I listed above. now he put me on ferrous gluconate 324mg once daily, I stayed on it for one month and then he took me off?! my question is if I'm having health problems wouldn't you want me at the optimum level of ferritin? cause hes just saying well your above the "low" range which they consider 8 for ferritin to be "low" isn't being lower around 19 ferritin not optimal? wouldn't it be better to be at a higher "optimal" range so we could make me feel my best?!

That doesn't mean that huge supplement is necessary.  You might just need to eat better.  Iron is present in a lot of valuable foods, such as parsley, beets, nettles, and a host of others.  Overdosing on iron, on the other hand, can lead to heart disease.  Sounds like your doc is being properly conservative, and if you're still having health problems may have determined this isn't the source of the problem.  High iron doses can also cause nausea and constipation, so I think your doc is being responsible.  If you feel you want to continue supplementing iron at a reasonable level, check into a product called Herbal Iron by Floradix.  Very assimilable.  Another possibility is B12 -- a deficiency of that can also lead to a form of anemia.  Something else that might help is chlorophyll, or something very high in chlorophyll such as wheat grass juice or spirulina.  Chlorophyll has virtually the same chemical structure as hemoglobin, so it is also helpful for oxygenating the blood.
