Magnesium supplement

by BillTheCat, Oct 18, 2009 10:19PM
I take a multi vitamin in the mornign with B vitamins (it also has 19% daily recommended of magnesium).  I have heard the Magnesium is good for depression/anxiety.  I want to take a magnesium supplment (350 mg).  I was told to take it in the evening with calcium (milk) to help with sleep.  I then read that magnesium and calcium compete.  Should I take a mangesium supplement?  If so, when and how?

The recommended dosage for Magnesium for your age is 420mg daily. Magnesium (Mg) works with Calcium and there are no issues unless there is Mg depletion due to disease factors or high doses of calcium intake of individuals with poor renal function. Mg supplement usually contains Calcium. Suggest eating Mg source foods instead of supplementation.  Spinach, black beans, potato (with skin on), peanuts, Sea Bass, brown rice, butternut squash, nonfat milk, and chicken breast to name a few high Mg food sources.
