My uncle has had severe persistant abdominal pain for 2 weeks

Hello,
My uncle (age 48) has had severe abdominal pain for at least 2 weeks now. It is so painful that he cannot sleep at night. He is waiting to see a doctor until March 1 because his health insurance does not kick in until then. He did go see a local small town docter ( not a regular MD, but a general prac.) He recommended my uncle get a colonoscopy ASAP. He did prescribe  a sedative for my uncle so he could at least get some sleep. He also recommended Metamucil and a bland diet in the mean time. My mother and I are concerned as to what it could be? And possible serious issues from waiting another 2 weeks?

Abdominal pain, like nausea or headache, can signal so many things.  Obviously, he may need tests, or medication, or more.  How severe is the pain?  Is there nausea/vomiting, fever, tender abdomen, or diarrhea?  Has he been out of the country?  It could be an aneurysm, infection, or one of many other diagnoses.  I wish him the best.
