Osteoporosis & Vitamin D

by bbq33, Nov 09, 2009 07:43AM
I tested very low for Vitamin D. I live in Alaska and get almost no sunshine. I also have Osteoporosis. Could the lack of Vitamin D cause me to loose calcium and cause the Osteoporosis?

Yes.  Vitamin D is essential for the absorption of calcium.  Most Americans also take in excess calcium and insufficient magnesium, which have to be in proper balance to build and maintain strong bones.  Dairy, for example, which they keep telling us to drink, is very high in calcium but deficient in calcium.  Excess calcium will leach out magnesium from the body.  It's complex, but vitamin D is an essential factor.  Time to start taking a supplement.
