Psyllium vs Flaxseed

Psyllium vs Flaxseed

Hello.  I am on the OptiFast Liquid diet.  I need to make sure I am taking fiber because I have a history of getting constipated.  I am 47 by the way.

Which is the better fiber for me?  Psyllium or Flaxseed?  Is there any danger with the Flaxseed and irritating the lining of the stomach.  Diverticulitis comes to mind.  I don't have it,but I am a person that does not taking new things for fear of contracting a medical problem.

I have read that both of these are good for cholesterol and high blood pressure, of both I have.  Which do you recommend and what is the safest way to take these.  How much and how many times a day.

Is it dangerous to take this daily?

I would suggest flaxseed. You can have it grounded up into powder or whole seeds. They both are ok. Once opening the container of powder or seeds, keep it in the refrigerator to prevent it from becoming rancid. One teaspoon daily would be fine. Diverticulitis occurs due to not having enough fiber in your diet and the wall of the colon may pouch out from straining the bowels to move. Those pouches may get seeds or nuts caught in them and cause serious irritation and possible infection. To prevent constipation, is to increase fiber in your diet. OptiFast has no fiber. Benefiber is another option. It is fiber and dissolves in the drink with no flavor. Hope this helped.
