Soy Milk

Hi :-)  I am very interested in changing my eating habits and learning more about nutrition.  I recently was told that soy milk can cause thyroid problems.  Would any one like to share pro's and con's of consuming a lot of soy in your diet?

Thanks,
B.

It depends on the kind of soy.  Soy doesn't cause thyroid problems, but some people with Hashimoto's Disease, a form of hypothyroid autoimmune disease, can have bad reactions to soy.  Soy milk is fine, tofu is fine, tempeh and other fermented soy products such as miso and natto and real soy sauce (this doesn't mean Kikkoman) are fine, fresh soy beans (edamame) are fine, but this shouldn't obviously be the sum total of your diet.  All legumes have positive qualities, are good sources of protein and fiber.  And remember, all soy milk isn't created equally.  Only buy organic soy products, avoid the soy based additives in so many foods such as TVP and hydrolyzed protein and soy extract and such -- the more processed any food is, the less healthful it is.  Also remember that soy is a common food allergen, so be alert for that possibility.  What you need are a few good books on nutrition, since nobody really knows what's best to eat and there are many theories about it.
