cacium and bovine para thyroid

by dkm123, Jul 25, 2006 12:00AM
I am taking calcium with bovine para thyroid. Is this safe?  Will this affect normal thyroid functions?  Is there anything I should be watchfull of?

why are you taking them?

I am taking the calcium because my chiropracter said I should.  I feel a metabolic boost from them and I just want to know if they are safe.

I am concerned that any chiropractor would suggest any kind of medication whether it be OTC or prescription. Perhaps after an xray he decided your bone density was questionable.  If this is the case, talk to your doc and get a DEXA (bone density) test done to see how the bone is doing.  Calcium should be taken with vitamin K and D to be properly absorbed.  To check out if this is actually good to take, go talk to the local pharmacist. It is free, and he/she will evaluate all the meds and supplements you are taking and tell you honestly the pros and cons of taking this supplement.  good luck

what was the reasoning the chiropracter gave you?

Do some google research on Dr. Hans Selye, who is famous for documenting the harmful effects of excess calcium. There are two arguements pro and con bovine thyroid extract vs synthroid. If the bovines are prion free the natural is better, however there is inadquate prion screening. I wouldn't get overly paranoid since millions of people take the natural kind and there is no evidence of people contracting prion disease, but the synthetic version is absolutely prion free. I honestly question the justification for you taking the calcium supplements.

Star Queens advice was on the money. I would recommend a vitamin D3 supplement, and of course, lots of daily exposure to sunshine.
