can't gain weight with high metabolism

by Jester2005, Jan 16, 2009 12:45PM
Hello,

I've always been underweight and finally got used to it (was around 102 as a teen). When I started birth control I gained about 5lbs and felt better about myself... and when I started meds for BP and finally got to be between 112-122 and was soooo HAPPY about it!! But then this year I went into a huge depression and lost it all  : (

I have such a high metabolism I feel I cannot put on weight. I see that you suggest exercise to a lot of people for gaining weight, but I once joined a gym and it didn't work... gained 5lbs, plateaued, and lost it again.

I can eat a lot, I mean a LOT... I can make spaghetti and eat the whole meal (as in 2-3 big plates), but then not even an hour later I'm hungry again. From the time I eat supper until I go to bed, I eat. I can only go to sleep once I am so completely full I pass out on the couch... Which also worries me because "they say" that you shouldn't eat before bed or you'll gain weight... so what's going on with me?

I guess my big question is: what should I EAT to help me gain weight? Should I stick to carbs or protein? Or eat more fruits and veggies? (I'll admit I don't eat ANY right now)... I want to put the weight back on before I go back to work (in a couple weeks) because I don't want my co-workers to see how much I've lost. I feel embarrassed  :(

You are only 5lbs underweight for your height. Suggest you eat all the food groups, including fruits and vegetables, 3 times a day with snacks between meals. Try nutrient dense drinks 1-2 a day, either purchase them, such as Ensure or Boost, or make your own milkshakes - milk, ice cream, and frozen fruit blended together or yogurt smoothies - yogurt, milk, and frozen fruit blended together for additional calories, protein and nutrients to help increase your weight. Hoped this helped you.
