cravings

by Dazon50, Oct 18, 2009 08:59PM
Hi...I am glad I found this forum today.  It was right under my nose..lol.  I am wondering what cravings for kippers might mean.   I felt the craving a couple of nights ago & ate a small can of it (not the tin..lol).  I went out late afternoon today & bought 4 small cans & one of sardines with olive oil (I never eat sardines).  This past year especially I have been craving seafood...like shrimp, salmon.....

I was trying to google kippers to see what the nutrition is.  Does anyone know more about what might lead to such a craving?  I take a whole hodge-podge of vitamins/supplements almost daily including noni & hyluronic acid (not sure of the spelling).

thanks,
Donna

Hi Donna~Nice to see you here.

I would say the cravings are letting you know that you have a zinc deficency. Zinc is found is seafood, and since this is what you seem to be craving, I would say this might be a reason. Are you taking a good multi-mineral, a good amount of zinc is 50 mg daily.

They are very high in the essential fatty acids DHA and EPA.  Both affect mood and brain function, as well as deliver the good cholesterol, which also makes them good for hormone production.  But they are so good for you and so full of nutrients, it would be hard to single out just one.  Maybe you just have an urge to visit England.

LOL...I went to Health Hut today & got some Zinc tablets...along with some other things including for thyroid.  I think I have low...seem to have the symptoms for it.  I know that diet is so important.  I notice when I drink soda, the urine output decreases.  When I ate full meals like fried chicken/mashed potatoes, bread, etc. at various restaurants, I would feel lethargic the next morning...like "death warmed over".  Someone suggested it might be monosodium glutamate...msg's in the food.  So I stopped eating those kinds of meals at restaurants.

:-))
Thanks for the input

Careful with the thyroid treatment.  You should have your thyroid checked first to see if you're hypo or hyper; most natural thyroid remedies treat hypo and aren't recommended for someone with hyper.  Both cause the same symptoms.  As for zinc, nice to get that checked, too, since if you're not low on it you can overdo it.  Doctors are nice for diagnosis; how you treat what you learn is up to you.

Thank you for the caution.  I should ask the Doctor to check my levels...it has been awhile.

Respect your cravings. You have a dietary deficiency that you are treating by eating fish. A couple of years ago I developed an insatiable craving for clams. I couldn't get enough of them. If anybody tried to take my clams I would have hit him. Then I realized what my need was - iodine. I started to take Atomadine (a form of iodine) and after 30 years of intractable insomnia I started to sleep like a normal person. Your body is really smart. Listen to it.

Sorry, I don't agree with you about doctors being good diagnosticians. In the first place they know nothing about nutrition. All they know is pills. And if they can't diagnose you they suggest going to a shrink. My 30-insomnia was never diagnosed. They talked nonsense about sleep clinics. I had to find the cure myself. And it was a simple one - iodine.

You're mistaking diagnosis for treatment.  Pills are treatment, not diagnosis.  Nutrition is treatment, not diagnosis.  I'm glad the iodine works for you, but keep in mind the regular intake of iodine can also be toxic and cause hyperthyroid.  For you, it helped, but it could just as easily have made you sicker.  A good diagnostician can run tests to check iodine levels.  Of course, they don't, you usually have to see a holistic nutritionist for that and even then, you have to get tested over a period of time for accurate testing.  This stuff is hard.  Anyway,  I half agree with you, half disagree.  I say use everyone, including doctors, but when it comes to treatment, we're on our own.

Thank you for the English lesson. I had my thyroid checked when I identified my craving for iodine-rich foods. That I tested hypothyroid was no surprise to me. I have worked  in the medical field as an editor/writer which may be why I do not share your blanket worship of physicians.
