high cholesterol

by granea, Sep 26, 2007 11:58AM
I have high cholesterol. In July my ldl was 174, hdl was 43, total cholesterol was 289, triglycerides was 325. I am not on meds because they don't agree with me. I eat hardly anything. Mostly salads, oat bran cereal with low fat milk. And nothing works. I can starve myself, which bascially I am doing, and it still doesn't go down. I don't eat red meat, just chicken. Don't care for fish.  I am so tired of being hungry all the time. I take one a day cholesterol plus multi, vit C, omega-3 Complex, and calcium with D. I am skinny so obesity is not a problem and I am 63. What else can I take? What can I do? Guess I am just not eating right. Stay so tired. I think my dad had high cholesterol, so gues I am doomed.

Our liver naturally "makes" cholesterol for body functions, however, when we consume additional cholesterol, from our diet, it increases in the blood. If a person is lowering all the fats in their diet (as you seem to be by your question information) and the blood levels do not decrease, then it is recommended to go on Cholesterol lowering medication. You stated cholesterol medication does not agree with you. There are numerous types of medication that lower cholesterol via different mechanisms in the body. Hopefully you are able to tolerate one type. Best of luck.

Am I allowed to suggest what has worked for me to drop my triglycerides & total cholesterol apart from drug therapy?

I would love to have your input, willandv,  since I don't know what else to do.

Well I have high cholesterol as well. Back in 2003 it was 240  and at age 23 that wasn't a good thing. Now I'm age 26 and its 210 in 2007. I workout and eat lean meats and vegs. to stay in check with mine along with taking a multivitamin(Centrum Performance). It helps but you have to work hard at it. Try drinking green tea and eating fish. Trust me it helps big time or I should say its helped in my case. But I also have to watch out with heart disease. My mom died at a young age and well thats one of my fears so I try my hardest to not end up where my mom did.
