vitamin deficient??

vitamin deficient??

I am a 51 year old female, In the last 6 months or so I have developed very apparent ridges in my nails. I asked my doctor about them, while seeing him for a check-up, he agreed that I might be deficient in vitamins. When I pressed him further for specifics, he said he had no idea. Can you give me more insight or how to remedy this ridge problem or what vitamin I am lacking in?

Hi there,
I found this.  Are the ridges vertical?  Might not be a problem.
However,
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA)  recommends that all people take a multi-vitamin.  Why? Because, they say, 80% of Americans don't get anything close to the amount of fruits and veg that are needed to be healthy.  Also, that today's diet isn't good enough to fight of chronic diseases.
RDA's were designed to prevent vitamin deficiencies, not provide optimal health benefits.
Because of the use of NPK fertilizers, our soil has become depleted in minerals.  Therefore, so has our food.
If you do supplement - it's always best to talk with your Doctor.  But do your research first.  Many doctors only recieve an hour or 2 of nutrition at University.  So, don't be surprised if some Drs scoff at the idea.  It's slowly changing in the medical community.  But not fast enough.
Usana's vitamins are pharmaceutical grade.  In a study of 1500+ brands (Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements) only 4 (!!!!) received top marks.  Yes, Usana was one of the 4.
Usana's are in the Physician's Desk Reference book.  Your Dr can't argue with that!

good luck!
oh, and be careful with drugstore quality calcium... a recent study showed that 25% of products tested had unacceptably high lead levels.  Usana's has no lead :)
