Below 160 TOTAL cholesterol is NOT GOOD; this condition is known as Hypocholesterimia. The likelihood of developing serious health problem increases as the total count decreases. Typical health issues include: depression, reduced brain function (brain fog), endocrine, etc. The list is very long for all medical conditions impacted by low cholesterol.

For the most part the medical community has settled on 150 – 160 TOTAL cholesterol as the threshold for hypocholesterimia. Though no surprise, others in the medical community feel that this threshold is too high.

My knowledge stems from my own very low total cholesterol which averages @ 120. My lowest ever total was only 93. I have several serious health issues directly related to my low cholesterol. Fortunately I now have an excellent Lipidologist, Dr. Kwiterovich, at Johns Hopkins.

From personal experience, most doctors do not have a clue about any problems stemming from low cholesterol.  A friend with a total count of 162 has a doctor who wants to get her total count down to 100.
