16 year old daughter newly dx's OCD

by JustJessica33, May 25, 2008 10:57AM
Hi,
My PCP just prescribed Lexapro 10mg (for OCD), and Klonopin 0.5 (for anxiety attacks), plus she has Seroquil if she can't sleep.  I have not given her ANY of these medications.  I was wondering if anyone on here has a teenager with Severe OCD could tell me what they are taking.  I have done my research and i think that Luvox would be the right medication, with something like ATIVAN for her anxiety/panic attacks.  I am waiting to get her into a therapist for a second opinion, but would rather know from people who have gone through it, rather than someone who has watched.    My daughter is 5'2" and only weighs 115 soaking wet, I am so afraid of her getting over medicated.  Mu PCP is not the best, but the only one that will accepts me and my girls as a whole.family ( I have many of my own health issues).

Also if there are any teenagers/parents on here that would like to help me better understand how I can help my daughter deal with her OCD I would appreceiate it,  I know that everyone is different, but if you have any tips, ideas, advise please feel free to share.

I'm 24 with OCD and Anxiety Attacks, my doctor just prescribed me 50mg Zoloft, I'd assume a little higher then the Lexapro dose. I think doctors should be more hesitant, especially in kids/younger adults to prescribe things such as Klonapin, as it has potential for addiction though it is a small dose. I'm no expert, but maybe try her out just on the Lexapro at first and maybe in the case of an over-alarming panic attack, allow her to take the .05 klonapin. Just my two cents

I am age 25 w/ OCD and anxiety. I wonder if she sees a therapist, that initiates effective sessions with her. I was diagnosed at age 14 w/ OCD, but I just wished my parents or someone would have noticed and supported me then. If I just had someone to warn me that it could effect me for the rest of my life I would have addressed it then. It was only a few ticks then and I could have kicked it in a heartbeat. But now that it is too late it effects my family and myself everyday in a very negative way. My husband does not take it seriously and he picks on me. He also gives me guilt trips about how much time it takes away from our important time together. He says to me that my obsessions come before my family, that cuts deep. Usually I do not realize what I'm doing until someone says something. Meds never worked for OCD, but I have been on .25 mg xanax since 18. It is barely effective, but it takes off the edge. I would suggest trying 1/2 tab of clonapin if she really needs it. She should not be overmedicated from that. As long as you remain in control of her dosages she should not develop addiction. Trust me, my anxiety relief pills really help, I only use them once a week or less now. But I could probably not live without them when I do need them. Good luck!

Thank you so much.  Yes she is now seeing a therapist.  Ever since she told us what her day consisted of, with her compulsions, we UNDERSTAND why she is so tired after school,  why she has headaches and withdrew from us.  She told me that even though she still does her compulsions she feels better just knowing what it is and that she can talk about it and not be "Punished" for who and what she goes through.  She is very hesisatant to take the meds and wants to try behavior/therapy and see how she does.  Since she got dx's she has not had a panic attack, when she was having at least three a week before she told us anything.
