9 year old on too many drugs for OCD control

My youngest daughter is 9 and has been on fluvoxamine, trazadone and recently an anti-psychotic medication was addedd.  I feel like I am always pouring medicine down her throat and I wonder if I am doing the right thing.  We recently switched our insurance so we can branch out and see some other doctors and get their opinions.  She has gained a lot of weight and is made fun of for that and for being so different, she doesn't have friends, it is heartbreaking to her and to me.  I'd love to hear any suggestions or success stories especially with a more natural way of controlling it than all of the meds.

Have you tried Empower Plus by the company True Hope? Vitamin and mineral supplements that help those with neurological disorders. We have had great success with our son who has OCD, Tourette syndrome and depression. He is on no meds now and feels a lot better.

Hello lotsofanxiety. I hate that it took months for me to see your post, for I have some very important input, and I hope you see this!

I suffer from OCD quite severely, and sometimes it crippled me to a point where I would isolate myself from the world, and would grow suicidal from it. In the past few months, I have been in something known has Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This therapy helps a person realize their obsessive compulsive behaviors, and helps a person have a better control over these behaviors. That control helps the person's anxiety from the OCD greatly.

I used to go in and out of health clinics like I was popping tic tacs. In fact, I grew a reputation at that health clinic! But with help from my counselor, I haven't been to that health clinic since October of last year. At first, it seems like that CBT doesn't work, but it really does. It has to run its course.

I would recommend CBT over medication any day. Medication at such a young age can throw off a body's development, stunt someone's growth, and what have you, especially during puberty. I was thrown on so many ADHD medications when I went through puberty, and I didn't turn out too well until I went in for therapy. Now I'm about to turn 24 in less than 2 weeks, and I'm still relying on my parents and whatnot.

So yeah, I can speak from personal experience that medications help you gain a tiny bit of control, but the cons of medication outweigh the pros big time. In the long run, it's better to treat it with words instead of pills.
