What can we do to help?

by gullett, Jun 23, 2008 06:26AM
My brother wont let us help him,I cant label him has having OCD as he havent been diagnosed, but the symptoms do point to that.
He says he has no problem and that everyone else has the problem,he does not sleep at night(he sleeps in the daytime,he says he cant sleep at night). He is obsessed with watching wrestling(he cant miss one,if my mother puts her foot down and tells him he cant watch it he goes into a terrable tantrum, the thing is he is 23.he also tapes every single episode and has done for at least 5 years).
We noticed there was something not right when he started washing his hands on a very frequent basis,he washes them after any little thing and he has a way how to wash them(he starts with his arms and carrys on from there). He is in the bathroom washing his hands at least 15 minutes at a time, and when he has a bath he is in there for three hours(he has got clean the bath even though it has been cleaned earlier that day and no one has used it).
He does not eat much because he believes things are dirty and is underweight.
We are trying to suport him but it is hard, can you sugest what we can do to help him because he wont help himself?

Your brother has many symptoms of OCD. He needs to get help and soon if he is going to lead a better life. A counselor could work with him about all of these obsessions with taping shows on TV and washing hands. Medication could also help. I strongly suggest for him to see a doctor about it. You can keep being supportive but not allow this to continue. I have a friend who had this problem and I called them out on it and they got help.
