OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER (OCD) COMMUNITY
advice would be nice.

advice would be nice.

My boyfriend has OCD, and his type is really bad cause he hears voices telling him not to do things or he'll "change" into this person that he doesn't like and doesn't want to become. Recently, his OCD's been bad, and keeps asking me whether he'll change or not. Maybe it's because he's stressed out from exams that's made his OCD bad, but I don't know. He can't touch things that relate to that person or if that thing touched something that touched another thing that's related to that person/that person has touched before. He can't stand the number 6, and he has issues with certain words that relate to that person. Is there something I can do to shut the voices up, or do I just have to go on telling him that he can't change? Whenever I slip up and do/say something that triggers his OCD, he gets mad and we start arguing. I haven't actually told him but his OCD stresses me out sometimes, cause I'm so afraid of triggering it.

People with OCD do not hear voices. He has some type of psychosis, probably schizophrenia.

i've done some research and there are some sites that say some OCD cases hear voices. I always thought his OCD was mild (hand washing etc) but he's placed high on the scale because of the voices.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information but it's incorrect. While your boyfriend may have OCD, he would have to have an additional illness to hear voices.

No, it's not like that. The voices actually tell him stuff. Well, he has been diagnosed with OCD, and the only reason he's placed high on the scale is because of the voices.

if he is hearing his own voice in his head telling him to do or not do something etc that is a sign of OCD, if it is someone else speaking then it is definitely some time of psychosis.

hi,
sorry i know this isn't very helpful and that some will disagree...but i had trouble with voices telling me to do things as well....tho i could not pin down exactly who or what they were it seemed they were coming from an entirely different part of my brain (but my brain nonetheless) anyway, i was just recently diagnosed with ocd....
anyway, to help him i suggest helping him relax and also if possible talk to him about these voices...it always helped me when i felt i could share with someone

hey,
yeah, i think he has the same thing as you. it's really uncommon, i guess.. he does tell me about them, so that's good. i haven't been having any problems with his ocd recently. i've been trying very hard not to do/say anything that might upset him.

He needs to go see a psychiatrist.
OCD doesn't cause voices, he's got some sort of split personality disorder/skitzophrenia.

I had a mild case of it when I was younger because my father was very abusive, but it's simmered down where I haven't had an outbreak in a few years.

He needs to get on some antipsychotics. It helped me, and it'll help him.

OCD sufferers tell themselves that they need to carry out a behavior in order to prevent something bad from happening.  It is like being a prisoner of some alien force.  That is why they are compelled to do things, wash hands, count, etc. in order to avoid something bad happening to them.  It is irrational but it is ingrained in their thinking and behavior.  The voices may not be actual voices at all but merely his own thought process commanding him to perfrom compulsive behaviors.  A good behavioral psychologist can tell if he needs medication.  Unless absolutely necessary, I would personally avoid medication since their is no cure and the effects of the medication could be worse then the condition.  I have had a lifetime of OCD and would be happy to further discuss this condition.
