bouncing, body rocking, etc.

Hi, I posted in a thread and was afraid i would not get any respose back,so i decided to try again.I under stand what body rocking is and bounceing is .But my question is has anyone else ever started to rock in this position as a baby ,toddler and carry it on through adult hood. For as far back as memory can take me I have rocked in this position of sitting on the bed sort of in a leap frog position ,meaning sitting on my butt with legs folded back and arms and hands extended towards the mattress to push myself back and forth. This is something i did and still do to the point of exhaustion .Only to stop recoup and start again.I would get in trouble and yelled at as a older toddler to getting punished as a adolesent for doing it .At that time I learned quickly I need to hide and conceal it.I would actually get upin the middle of the night to pursue this and be dead tired the following morning becaused I rock sometimes as fast as i could push my self back and forth.I had and have other developmental issues that may be associated with this ,from it or because of it .Or possible the rocking is from the other issues i have..I just have never found anyone who has had to rock in the position I do to matain sanity.Any input will be greatly appreciated .Thank you

Hi

Yeah, I'm 37 and have been rocking since I was a toddler. When I was very young I'd chunter little tunes to myself and bash my head against the side of the bed and when I was in bed, the pillow. The chuntering and the head-bashing stopped in childhood but the rocking hasn't. It's a rocking either on all fours or in the foetal position.

Hi Marcy....things like this are only a problem when they interfere with a person's day-to-day life, i.e., they don't get things done because of the rocking, or they don't go out with friends because of the rocking, etc.  Rocking has obviously not affected your day-to-day life and so I'm not saying you should stop.  For example, someone got on here once and talked about daydreaming.  Well it interferes with their life.  I daydream but it doesn't interfere with my life so for me it is not a problem that I need to fix.  So rock away.....

HI JGF25, Its always wonderfull to hear any input from you.I first just posted to find out if others have or do rock in the position I do .As i just recently started looking into why I rock I was puzzled to find no one else haveing to rock back and forth in the position I assume. Then I wondered if was a form of infantilism or me that would not go away. I understand now what you mean that any position is abnormal behavior when done in complete excess like i do.My whole life had and has been about me focusing on rocking back and forth on the bed and thing associated with it.I alwas new it was not normal to get up at least at the minimum of a hour early to allow time to rock back and forth before work. Then concentrate and think about doing it all day. Then most days rushing home to do it then doing what needed to be done.often putting off or not doing so I can get on the bed to rock.Proubly the only commited relationship i had ended in disaster over this .When i shared with them my need and compulsion for it they thought i was just plain crazy. At first i just over looked it .But soon realized i could not have a relationship because of this and choose in life not to.Its funny how you mentioned that i have some controll over it because i dont do it in front of people, but when doing it i dream how it would be to beable to do frely in front of others without be judged for it.I tried the other night when i woke up in the middle of the night to fight the urge like you said but soon caved in ,i guess if i can take small steps its a start. Thanks so much for your help and input on this .

Hi Denise...I'm sorry that I don't have the answer you are looking for but let me say that if you are rocking, in any position because position really doesn't matter, on a daily basis and it has prevented you from living a more full life even to the extent that you have not had a successful relationship because of it, then you need to find some sort of help.

What you have to realize is that you have some control over this because you are not out in the street rocking in front of strangers.  I think you do it because it does take you away from the everyday stressors of life.  There are people that pull their hair out, pull out their eyelashes, etc.  People that pick their skin relentlessly.  Your disorder is really like these other ones except that the scars that are left behind are not visible to the naked eye.  It is a complusion that you must do to satisfy some sort of urge.

So I'm going to suggest a book.  In this book there are cognitive behavioral strategies for people that do perform hair pulling and skin picking.  Hopefully, using these techniques you can start to wean down the bodyrocking and replace that time doing something more constructive even if it means that you throw on your tennis shoes and go out for a run.  At some point you have to say ENOUGH.  Now I'm not saying you can stop this overnight.  It will take quite a bit of time and dilligence on your part.  After all it has become a life-long habit.

The book is called The OCD Workbook:  Your Guide to Breaking Free of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  You can get it on Amazon and it is pretty cheap.

You owe it to yourself to try.  Another thing I will tell you is that for myself I notice that say when I'm standing in church, I find myself swaying back and forth.  Nothing crazy but just a gentle rock from leg to leg and I'm sure people aren't looking at me like I have two heads.  Also, when I sit cross-legged my leg is usually swinging out and in.  Also another thing that people are not going to think is nuts.  Maybe, and I'm not a doctor, but trying to at least try to take one of your bodyrocking sessions and sway or swing your leg for a determined amount of time and then get up...replace what you are doing with something less harmful with set limits.

Another thing...have you ever tried meditating?  When you want to bodyrock, go to Youtube and pull up one of the many meditation videos that they have on there.  Give that a try as well.

Otherwise, I hope you find what you are looking for and that you find a way to take back your life.  Take care of yourself.

Hi, JGF25,It was nice to have one actual response here ,didnt think i wasgoing to receive any.The sad thing was its not exactly what I was looking for.Or is it im just hopeing to find the answer that i think I want or need to hear.Im confused upon that one.First I dont think I could afford a psychologist at the present time.Second, since I have rock daily everyday of my life in this position do I really need to seek treatment for it .Something like that proubly should have been started pre-adolesent I think.Instead I got repermannded and punished for it.Did i do it as a form of rebellion for the punishment I receved or for the attention I receved from it.Or was it just plain release from life.I do feel if like many others if i had all the time i spent and do spend and future time I spend i would have a whole other life time ahead of me.Maybe you are right listening to my self that i need to find controll over it.I feel it does not harm no one .except myself during the day i find myself daydreaming about getting home to do it.I have never ever had a successful relationship ever for it .Once i sprang it upon my friend they thought i was crazy. So during my free time away from my bed I daydream about focking in a position that I cant find anyone else who has .Much like yourself as a infant i proubly did start on all fours and learned the soothing comfort of sitting like that.As early as I can remember thats how and the only way I have rocked back and forth .So I still search for others that we can relate to.I would love to also hear any imput you have on this as it seems your very knowledgeable on this .Thanks Much Denise

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

Bodyrocking is what is considered a stererotypic movement disorder.  OCD and anxiety can be linked to bodyrocking.  The treatment for it is typically cognitive behavioral therapy and sometimes medication is used such as what is listed on the following website:

http://www.minddisorders.com/Py-Z/Stereotypic-movement-disorder.html

So in short, you should be seeing a psychologist to learn why you bodyrock so that a treatment plan can be put in place.  As far as the position goes, I'm not sure about that.  I have read many instances of bodyrocking and honestly it is probably different for everyone.

As an small child I rocked in my crib on all fours.  I rocked so hard that the crib moved across the hardwood floor in front of the door and my parents had to come in through the window (My sisters still tell this story).  As I got older I rocked myself to sleep.  It was a very pronounced back and forth rocking while I was laying down that absolutely drove my sisters crazy.  However, at some point I stopped.  I have no idea at what age.  I do have OCD though so bodyrocking was probably a very early sign of my OCD.

Try to get yourself into see a psychologist and go from there.  Let us know how you are doing.  :)
