Dental Implants and Tongue Swelling

by Kriste0709, Dec 17, 2008 10:24PM
Hello, I'm a 26 year old female who has had A LOT of work done to my teeth already. I had to have a lower right molar removed about a year ago and my tongue on that side swells a little bit every now and then. I wasn't sure if it is because there is no tooth there OR if it is because I have "Geographic Tongue." OK, I was just told today that I have to have 4 Dental Implants put in on my lower right side. So, I'll have to have 3 more teeth removed (#'s 28, 29 and 31) and it has to heal for about 3 months before the crowns can go in for the implants. So, since my tongue swells a little bit now with # 30 out, do you think it will swell even more with #'s 28-31 out? I'm afraid that it will swell a lot and then when it's time for my 4 implants to be put in, will my tongue stay the same size or shrink back to normal? I'm a worrier and stress makes it worse. So, will my tongue swell even more during those 3 months and go back to normal when the teeth go back in? Or will it swell and not go back? Tongue swelling is scary. :( Thank you for your time.

Honestly, I have never had a patient with a similar complaint.  Geographic tongue also known a Benign Migratory Glossitis can give you the impression that your tongue is enlarged.  However, if actually measured the tongue remains the same size.

I suggest you speak of your concerns to the oral surgeon who is going to place the dental implants.
