Full orthodontic relapse possible?

I had braces removed about a year ago. Right after they were removed my face started to swell, was assymetrical and I had severe tmj symptoms. Despite my tmj I wore the retainers for about 6 months before tossing them. Now that I stopped wearing my retainers my teeth have begun to relapse and pain is at a minimum, however, now, my tmjs don't move in unison and my jaws open in a zig zag. My ortho removed 3 premolars when I had braces and now my number 1 priority is having a full relapse to it's pre-ortho state.
1. Is it possible to have a full relapse when I've had extractions?
2. And if so, how long does it usually take.
Also, my profile flattened due to the extractions. Is there a method in orthodontia to move the arch foward rather than backwards?
Thanks for your time in advance.

I am in the same boat as you. Hoping for relapse to pre-ortho state due to TMJ caused by brace. In the meantime, if you ever want to do brace again, I feel like you need to make sure to find an orthodontist that specialized in TMJ treatment (they can be very expensive, though), otherwise braces only worsen the symptom.

I am not an orthodontist so I cannot comment on your particular case.  However, I would suggest you speak with the orthodontist and discuss your concerns directly.

Generally speaking, relaspse is not surprising if the post-treatment tooth position is not maintained (retainer).
