why are some crown preps painful and others are not. I was in awful pain the day after the prep and then the pain subsided. It is only sensitive now. once in a while i have a sharp nerve pain for an instant.

If the dental work done was close to the nerve inside the tooth then the nerve may become inflammed.  This inflammation is usually temporary and gradually improves over several days.

If you are not experiencing steady improvement or the symptoms persist for more than a week you need to go back to the dentist.  In some cases the inflammation is irreversible and a root canal is necessary.  This does not mean anything was done improperly.
