elbow problems

by ironmike101, Feb 01, 2009 12:05PM
been experiencing pain in my elbow for about a month now. I have a screw in my elbow from about 16 years ago(33 years old now) when i hyperextended it skateboarding. At first my Dr thought it was tennis elbow..had x rays just to be sure. Turns out I have some "loose bodies" in the elbow. Causes pain and locks my elbow up quite often. I have a bunch of questions.

Got referred to an 80 year old specialist who I've heard some horror stories about(some good stories too). The good thing is, is that he is semi retired and I'll supposedly be able to get in to see him quick. Should I be prepared to get another specialist look at it?? I want to get fixed up ASAP, but I also dont wanna be butchered. I know it should just be orthoscopy surgery?? i think. And as far as I know, I think it would be kinda hard to screw that up, right???

Would I be better off gettin in line with a Dr. who has a better reputation???

Will my elbow get worse if i keep using it prior to getting it fixed??? As I like to lift weights. I could probably do partial reps and max contractions without botherin it toooo tooo much. should I sustain from this(even using light weights)??

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Desperate for answers. Thanks

I dont think i should be commenting on the reputation or skills of a surgeon I've never met.
However, I do think you have a few misconceptions that should be addressed.  Although arthroscopic surgery is ideal for removing loose bodies from an elbow, it is by no means "band aid" surgery, There can be very serious complications after elbow arthroscopy, it is very demanding, and although many orthopedists are competent arthroscoping knees and shoulders, the number drops off drastically with the elbow.  There are several neurovascular structures that can be damaged during surgery.

As far a continuing to work out, I don't think its such a good idea.  Every time your elbow locks you are doing damage to the remaining articular cartilage.  I always recommend my athletes listen to their bodies, and not try to play "through the pain."

Thanks for the feedack. I definitely dont want to do any more damage to my elbow. And thanks for clarifying the serious nature orthoscopic surgery is. Greatly greatly appreciated. Thanks again

I have a 12 year old boy who had left elbow surgery in December 2007 for osteochondritus desican. I am confused about his future in pitching. I have had one doctor say he would never be able to pitch again. I have other doctors & a physical therapist say that he could pitch again. What is your opinion.
