Rib injury

I impacted my left ribs snowboarding. I think my # 7 or 8 th rib on my left side (mid) at the apex of the rib curve is broken, cracked , or badly bruised. My question is : I feel a popping with pain in the apex area of that rib when I move off from lying on my back and also if I take a real large breath when laying on my back I get that painful popping sensation, is there any chance that with out taking an xray that it's just badly bruised and not fractured ?
