broken tibia and fibula with fixation

by zsandor, Mar 01, 2008 06:58AM
Dear Sir,

I broke by tibia and fibula 7 weeks ago. I was slipping on black ice why trying to catch the bus.
Two plates have been inserted one in each bone.
The cast is off since one week but I am not allowed to out weight on this leg for 3-4 more weeks.
The muscle of my sole is very stiff and this results in my firsy and espacially the second toe gets very stiffed and bended. I am making some massage and exercises given by PT. What else I can do in addition to the above to have these toes become flexible again.

Also I was playing karate before the injury I would like to know how long time I need to get back to this sport, even if in the beginning I am not doing any contacts.
Best regards, Zoltan

I broke my tibia and fibula also on 1/15.  I have a rod, plate and six screws.   I am partial weight bearing and working at a desk job.  I can drive.  I go back to the Orthopedic on 5/19.   I hope I can get my screws out as they bother me.  I fell in my kitchen.  I am very depressed over it. I use whirlpool therapy and take calcium for bone healing.  Waas wondering how long does it take to heel.  I am in good health.  I am 57 years old, female.

i am getting my screws taken out this month (date of accident- june 13, 2007)

my doctor told me screws are usually taken out two years post-op but mine are bothering me as well which is why im getting them taken out 13 months after surgery

do not be depressed about this, this is a fracutre from which you can and will fully recover,

With increase in age the healing is very slow and difficult for fractures of tibia and particularly fibula.
12 to 16 weeks rest is adviced after the surgery and follow up assessment after that.
If required you would need further surgical intervention. With recovery and healing you would have to start physiotherapy later to decrease your stiffness.
Take care!
