A Broken Ring Finger

A Broken Ring Finger

I punched a wall (painfully regret allowing myself to react in such a childish manner); anyway, after pulling my hand out of the wall, I looked looked at my left hand and noticed something wasn't right.  The tip of my left ring finger was limp, bent downwards and hurt like hell.  I thought it was just swollen so I continued arguing with my wife for another hour until the adrenaline wore off and I was in great pain.  She drove me to a clinic, they wrapped my hand in an ace bandage and said they would have to refer me to an orthopedic surgeon to be looked at and that I'd have to wait anywhere from one to two weeks for their call to schedule an appointment.  My wife and I walked away looking confused, but as brilliant as she is, even though I'd almost hit her an hour later, we put our heads together, called our insurance company (The Venetian Hotel and Casino: United Health Care); I think they offer the best health insurance in Las Vegas.   To make this story short, we were able to book an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon not too far from our house.  He took x-rays, which I have and couldn't believe, shot me up with lidocaine and they immediately went to work by the process of reduction.  They repositioned the broken digit so it aligned as straight as it could, put a pin inside to keep it straight while it healed,  put me in a full arm cast with sling and prescribed me Hydrocodone and Amoxycillin and had me revisit them every Thursday after that for followups.

My finger seems to be healing fine and it looked to be getting better per the X-Rays they've taken.  As of May 14th, last week, the pin was finally removed and the cast has been downgraded to a small finger splint.  I can now work better.  I feel absolutely no pain except for when I hit my finger against something, hit it against the turn signal switch in the car or my dogs jump on my hand.  The pain goes away in seconds, but I cannot bend the broken tip much.  It hurts at that time.  My question is how long does it take for a "snapped off" digit to completely heal itself to the point where I'll be able to bend it almost like normal?  What should I be prepared for as far as physical therapy, which I start next Friday.  My orthopedic surgeon was fantastic but I still have fears about my finger being immobilized for so long.  I've heard some people say they never regained full functionality of their broken member.

Sincerely with thanks,

Charles
