Greetings, This post may be to late to be of benefit but for several years I have benefited from Hyaluronic acid (Synvisc, Hyalgan, Orthovisc) injections into the base of my thumbs (Basal thumb arthritis). Typically, I need injections every 6 to 8 months. Sometimes sooner and once in a while one or the other thumb will not require treatment for twelve months or longer. The injections themselves are not very uncomfortable, however for about the next 1/2 hour each thumb is very stiff and sensitive and the joint feels "over filled" and pressurized. This feeling subsides quickly. I read that this off label use doesn't work for every patient but it works for me. Regards, Ken
Hi thanks for your response. What is the best injection to alleviate the pain in CMC thumb joint? I reached my max with cortisone shots and i do NOT want surgery now. have you seen success with pain reduction with the Synvisc in the thumb joint?????
Thanks,d
Hi!
Yes, the Synvisc-One (hyalan) injection works best for a joint that has more hyaline cartilage like knee joint. It is less effective for a smaller joint like joints for your hands and feet. Please consult your doctor regarding this. Take care!
