Achilles?

Achilles?

I woke up on Sunday morning with excruciating pain in my right achilles.  Since then, the pain has not gone away at all.  It hurts most when I move my foot, and just yesterday, the tendon started making kind of a creaking noise when I move my foot.  I tried yesterday to drive, but it was so sore that I ended up using my left foot to work the pedals.  It's not so bad today as it has been, but the whole ankle joint feels very, very weak.  I don't believe the tendon is ruptured, but I am not sure what is going on with it.  I have it wrapped in an ACE bandage, but beyond that, I just don't know what to do.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi,
How are you? The Achilles tendon is the large tendon at the back of the ankle. It connects the large calf muscles (Gastrocnemius and Soleus) to the heal bone (calcaneus) and provides the power in the push off phase of the gait cycle.

Symptoms that you mentioned like excruciating pain in the ankle, swelling, soreness, redness of the skin on the ankle can occur due to achilles tendonitis. It occurs usually due to over use, over pronation, strenuos exercises, twisting exercises, running up the hills, wearing high heels etc. Physical examination by an orthopaedician is required.

Treatment is possible with ice, cold compression therapy, wearing heel pads to reduce the strain on the tendon, and an exercise routine designed to strengthen the tendon, cold compression therapy, antinflammatories, rehabilitation, ultrasound therapy, applying a plaster cast, steroid injections etc. If conservative measures fail, surgical management can be considered.
All the best.
