Alendronate side effects- brittle bones

I heard that with extended use bones will become more brittle with increased % of fractures occurring. Is this correct? If so, At what point (after how many years) is this a problem?

Hi there!

Yes, prolonged use of biphosphonates could lead to an increased risk of fractures. On a general note, its use is not recommended beyond 5 years, though the treatment schedule is best decided by a medical practioner.
Hope this information is helpful.

Take care!

Thank you. Interestingly enough, my gyno referred me to the pharmacist and the pharmacist couldn't tell me anything I didn't already know from the internet- so-- if you would be kind enough to offer your opinion - ..... if the mechanism of action is to decrease osteoclasts (thereby dead bone cells are not removed) - is this helpful to have denser bones made of dead bone tissue? I am thinking it may be better to increase calcium, improve general mineral, Vit D  nutrition and get another bone density test as opposed to taking biphosphonates. If  my bone density doesn't improve then I will consider taking it for up to 5 years. My concern now is - how healthy is it - really- in general to not allow the body to remove dead bone tissue? Would this not impede building healthy tissue? Thank you in advance for an opportunity to learn more.
